Controlling Slip-Ring Motors

WITH THE TORQ-MASTER SOFT STARTER

The Torq-Master soft starter is an electronic method of starting ( and stopping ) three phase squirrel cage motors, wound rotor or slip-ring motors.

With slip-ring motors, 'shorting-out' the slip-rings makes starting difficult as these motors have little or no starting torque. To achieve a satisfactory start, Ralspeed fit the Torq-master with a torque increasing resistor for connecting to the rotor terminals, which, when the motor is operating at full speed, is then automatically 'shorted-out,' this resistance being approximately 10% of conventional resistance sizes.

Slip Ring Motor Applications

Ralspeed have supplied these starters for Rock Crushers, Rolling Mills, Sewage Pumps etc. Additional advantages of the Torq-Master soft starter, included as standard are :

1. Electronic Overload.
2. Three Control Options - Keypad, Terminals & Serial Port.
3. Three methods of starting and ( if required ) stopping.
4. LCD Display makes monitoring current, status and fault diagnosis easy, as the messages appear in English on the display.
5. A by-pass contactor is fitted enabling the thyristors to 'shut-down' once up to speed, thus dramatically reducing heat-loss. With this feature the unit can be enclosed in an IP65 Enclosure.
