With an extensive range of enclosed soft starters now available for hire from drive technology expert, Ralspeed, it’s no longer necessary for companies with short- or medium-term requirements for soft starting to use scarce capital resources to purchase equipment outright. Instead, they can hire the soft starters they need at very competitive rates and offset the rental charges against corporation tax.
Ralspeed is now offering soft starters for rent for periods from one week to years and, in many cases, can provide immediate ex-stock delivery. The units are available to suit motors with ratings from 1 kW to 300 kW and are an ideal choice for temporary pumping installations, for use where large motors have to be started from generator-derived supplies, and to substitute for faulty equipment while repairs are carried out.
All Ralspeed soft starters supplied on hire feature rust and weather-resistant enclosures that make them equally suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.
Comprehensive motor overheat protection is also incorporated, along with provision for level control and terminals for connecting an optional RAL-TXT unit to allow remote monitoring and control via the ordinary mobile telephone network.
SOFT STARTING FOR HIRE!
Soft starters rated at 15 kW additionally feature an innovative wide-range overload facility that allows them be matched to motors anywhere in the range 1 kW to 15 kW simply by turning a selector switch located inside the panel. Larger soft starters in the range incorporate main and bypass contactors to ensure maximum safety and economy.
The soft starters are free standing and are supplied fully tested ready for immediate installation and use. Cabling is facilitated by the provision of pre-drilled gland plates.
Ralspeed provides comprehensive technical support for all of its hire products. This includes advice on selecting the most appropriate equipment for specific applications and guidance on installation, setting up and commissioning. In the unlikely event that is should prove necessary, the company also offers on-site support, which is accessible twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year.

Any size of pump from 1 kW to 15 kW can be controlled and protected with the new and unique multi-pump soft starter from motor control expert Ralspeed. In temporary pumping installations in particular, this is an important benefit, as it means that it is no longer necessary to use a different soft starter for each size of pump.
At the heart of the new multi-pump soft starters is a wide-range overload protection relay that is designed and manufactured by Ralspeed. This can be instantly set to match the size of the pump in use with a single rotary switch calibrated in kilowatts – no other adjustments or settings are needed. The overload relay also provides earth leakage protection and has provision for the connection of a thermistor to directly monitor motor temperature.
Ralspeed multi-pump starters are freestanding units housed in robust corrosion-resistant zintex sheet-steel enclosures. With an integral rain canopy and an IP54 ingress protection rating, they are equally suitable for use in indoor and outdoor applications. To ensure ease of use, the units incorporate a digital display that shows the kilowatt rating selected, the instantaneous running current and the operational status of the soft starter. In addition, the display stores historical information relating to the last eight trip conditions, which can be recalled at the touch of a button, enabling pump problems to be diagnosed quickly and easily.
For maximum convenience and flexibility, the multi-pump soft starters are equipped, as standard, with a load-break isolator, a hand/auto selector switch, a door-mounted emergency stop pushbutton and an analogue output proportional to motor current. Provision is also made for the connection of level controllers – a 24 V DC supply is provided for powering ultrasonic units together with a 12 V DC supply for use with float switches. Ralspeed multi-pump soft starter feature compact construction, measuring just 925 × 400 × 400 mm including mounting frame. They weigh only 30 kg and are fitted with a lifting hook, making them easy to transport and handle.

With the new RAL-TXT module from motor control expert, Ralspeed, remote monitoring and control facilities can be added easily and inexpensively to almost any conventional starter, soft starter or variable speed drive.
As standard, RAL-TXT modules are configured to send messages automatically when a start, trip or alarm condition occurs, but they can also be programmed to report other conditions to suit the requirements of the user. The modules can additionally be arranged to receive incoming calls to, for example, remotely reset a trip condition. This feature is safeguarded by extensive and effective security measures.
As well as sending text messages, RAL-TXT modules can also communicate via email, or simply by ringing one or more phone numbers. Messages of all types can be sent to multiple recipients. Other features supported include automatic status reporting at user-defined intervals, and remote configuration. RAL-TXT modules can optionally be fitted with a back-up battery, which enables them to report supply failures.
The modules use low cost pay-as-you-go SIM cards for maximum economy. They feature rugged construction and are designed for installation either on the outside surface of the starter panel or on a nearby wall, in order to allow unimpeded access for signals from the mobile phone network.
Standard versions measure just 205 × 125 × 70 mm and are equipped with eight digital inputs and one relay output. Special versions, with additional inputs can be supplied on request. Wall mounting brackets are for the units are also available.
