MD’S SUMMARY – RALSPEEDS 17TH YEAR OF TRADING

'Phew, so that’s another years trading behind us and a fantastic year it has been. Apart from several new developments and considerable outlay on software and new tooling for the workshop we have returned a healthy profit for the year and continue to consolidate our position in the soft starter market.

We have also made considerable gains in the variable speed sector and have doubled our turnover on sales into this market place using the Vacon and Hitachi range.

Peter Electronic - GermanyAs the UK distributor for Peter Electronics in Germany we have been pleased to see an increase in turnover on the new Versibrake and on the Versistart which we have incorporated into our new IP54 Economy range.'

We look forward to another great 12 months and all of us at Ralspeed would like to thank all our Customers & Suppliers for their support during the last year.

Kind Regards

Peter Schaffel – M.D.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS & FIGURES

TORQ-MASTER 2K SOFT STARTER - sold at 522kw per week!! – some of this in basic chasis form but a larger proportion than ever before in switchgear cabinets.

PETER ELECTRONIC UNITS – from our Economy Range – sold at 1200kw this year and represents a considerable increase from previous years.

DC INJECTION BRAKE UNITS - sold over 1000kw of braking units – a marked increase in our sales.

INVERTERS - Our sales of inverters from our partners Vacon & Hitachi have continued to grow but is mainly centred on project work rather than just ‘box shifting’.

The service & repair side of our business is still very healthy and we continue to give quick & efficient answers to customer requests for technical advice & backup.

EXAMPLES OF OUR WORK

In March of this year we were asked to produce a 355kw soft starter complete with an integrated by-pass contactor for delivery the same day. We received the order at lunchtime – had the unit assembled & tested by 7.30pm that evening, loaded it into our van and delivered it 100 miles away and gave advice on installation.

The end customer was an animal feed mill and their production was at a standstill. This type of service can only be achieved because of the vast stock of components we carry at Ralspeed.

SPECIAL FEATURE – ENERGY SAVING

Wind FarmEnergy Saving is very much a ‘hot potato’ these days and Ralspeed have many installations where we have used Variable Speed Technology to gain considerable energy savings.

Reducing the speed of air conditioning fans or hot water pumps etc can lead to substantial energy savings. Ralspeed can give you good indications of the amount of energy you can save and are willing to undertake surveys to establish your exact requirements.

There has been a lot written about energy saving by using the so called ‘Optimising Soft Starts’. At Ralspeed we ALWAYS use by-pass contactors so that the thyristor switching devices are out of circuit once full speed is achieved. This avoids heat loss and harmonic distortion.

There is a great MYTH surrounding the AC Induction Motor that it is very inefficient when only partially loaded. In FACT the opposite is TRUE and an AC motor is virtually a constant or fixed efficiency machine.

Consider the tables from a well known motor manufacturer – note that these are typical for ALL MANUFACTURERS

KW

FLC (415V)

From the table it can be seen that the larger kw sizes are the most efficient but in any case the efficiency does not vary much from full load down to half load.

Some companies are claiming 15 to 25% savings by using energy optimising soft starters!!!

This type of soft starter detects the power factor and reduces the voltage to the motor in order to reduce magnetic losses. This type of soft starter cannot be by-passed as the thyristors need to be left in circuit at all times.

EXAMPLE

Take the case of a 132kw motor from the table shown. Full Load it is 93% efficient. AT half load it is 90.5% efficient. It is easy maths to see that the efficiency drop is 2.5%. Even if the optimiser could ‘mop-up’ all of that extra loss and take the efficiency back to 93% that is a long way short of 15 or 25% savings!.

Add to this the fact that leaving the thyristors in circuit produces a heat loss of 1% of the absorbed power. This means that whatever savings are made during lowload running, needs to be offset by the fact that these switching losses are there all the time the motor is running.

There ARE SAVINGS TO BE MADE WITH SOFT STARTERS but more benefit can be achieved by using 2 distinct methods:

1). Underload Turn-off – Many motors in Industry today are running but not ‘producing’. They have simply been left on. Using the automatic load detect circuit on the Torq-master Soft starter can be used to shut down the motor until it is needed.

2). Cyclic Knock-off – there are some air conditioning plants and other applications that can save energy by turning off the motor for say, 10 minutes in every hour. Once the thermal capacity of a building is up to temperature a 10 minute off time would hardly be noticed but the result would be a 12.5% saving in energy usage.
